Speak up for Public land access

If you hunt public land in Montana view HB 235 and sign the petition that could open up more public land in Montana.

It is rare when the sportsmen and women of Montana have been offered a chance to greatly increase our access to public lands. HB 235, currently being heard by the House Judiciary Committee, offers such an opportunity. HB 235 would allow corner crossing where a person could cross over the top of a property corner from one property that was public or they had permission on to another property that was public or they had permission on.

HB 235 is sponsored by Rep. Hill-D and co-sponsored by Rep. Kerns-R who is the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee. Due to this bi-partisan support the bill has the very real possibility of passing.

For many, many years, sportsmen have bemoaned our lack of a specific statute that allowed access to public land from another piece of public land by crossing over the corner of said properties. With the advanced GPS technology, including land ownership software, available today it is possible to determine property corners with a high degree of certainty.

We may get only one shot to pass a bill such as this. Add your name to this roster and fight for the right to increase our access to public lands

A little Spring Training....

Mild but windy weather has us out and getting after it pretty good. The Big Sky Field Trial is holding its Spring weekend trial in Ulm next weekend as many member's are preparing for the Pacific Coast Championship to be held in Sunnyside, Wa. later in the month.

We are also preparing the grounds for our Spring Classic to be held Mid April in Winifred, Mt.

The grounds are proving to provide some birds...

March may be our second favorite time of the year.

Whats New....trials and training!

It was a great year for us here in Montana and the winter has been fairly kind so far. The Partridge are beginning to pair up and condition's for dog work is premium.

Congratulations to Austin Turley and Railita for securing Dog of the year for Region 14, "Vi" won the National Amateur Pheasant Championship, placed RU in the Montana Shooting Dog championship and RU in the Idaho Open Shooting Dog championship.

Sammy finished on top in the Region 14 All Age derby and earned the traveling trophy till next year.

Currently we are getting all the pups ready for the Pacific Coast Championships and the National Chukar Championships next month to be held in Sunnyside, Wa. and a weekend trial in Great Falls where training last week produced many finds.

New news has the Region 14 Shooting dog Championship coming to Circle in May, the Big Sky Field Trial Club moving the Spring Classic to Winifred, MT and adding an All Age Classic to the Shooting dog classic to be held April, 13, 14 and 15th. Yours truly will be the trial chairman and we are very excited about these news grounds. There will be six one hour courses on native prairie, farm and pasture land as well as sage flats, holding four species of birds.

Tim Powell and Dick Sellers have been getting the pups out...

Huck here showing his natural ability at just 7 months old...

Tim also has a new addition, Longhollows Montana Belle, who is a one year old prospect.

November's trip to Inola left us empty handed for placements but richer for fellowship and new friends...a big thanks to Mike Griffen and Jim Michaletz for advice and a pony to ride. Great crew down there in Oklahoma.

A little update....

The field trial world is a buzz with this recent announcement...

A new web based service, " to everyone interested in the sport, and offers special benefits through a web-based membership platform for individuals, organizations and businesses."

The last month has been busy with great weather, friends and good times.

Sammy placed first in the Open All Age derby in Great Falls....we finally got a placement that involved bird work and after dropping some weight off of him, we found his ideal size for getting consistent run out of him. I'm really happy with where we're at and getting close to breaking him.

In mid November, we're off to Kansas and the Inola field trial grounds in Oklahoma for the Region 8 AA Amatuer Championship. I'll be running Sammy's sire Hank (Prairie Crude), owned by Shawn and Glenn Conover in the Champiionship and maybe Sammy as well, then running Sammy in the open AA derby.

On the way home, we hope to join Ted for a couple of days of Quail hunting in Kansas.

I hope to keep y'all posted with photo's and updates.
